INTAKE AIR AND EXHAUST
A new Turbocharger (Fig 30) is designed for quieter
operation and needs no adjustment.
The Filter-Minder (Fig 31) is retained from previous
designs to indicate air filter restriction. The filter should not be opened
unless the Filter Minder shows significant restriction.
Two intake manifold heaters (Fig 32) are located
under the intake plenum.
The manifold heaters, which were previously controlled
by the JTEC PCM, are now operated by the ECM to warm the intake air and
improve cold starts. Heater cycle time lengthens as the ambient temperature
decreases. When the heaters have completed a cycle, the ECM turns off the
Wait to Start lamp on the instrument panel.
New for the ISB is the Manifold Air Pressure (MAP)
sensor which measures manifold boost.
A new one piece exhaust manifold (Fig 34) uses round
ports which have better exhaust flow than square ports. The new exhaust
manifold reduces warpage and leaks, and it is not interchangeable with
older manifolds.
