Reaching the engine compartment is difficult without a ladder. In my driveway, I use a 4' step ladder. When I am away from home I  use the Fold-A-Way bumper step from Geno's Garage Item Number : Item Number : BUMP-ST-94500

This step also folds down to a lower but somewhat less stable position (it still supports my 200 lb in the lower position).
