If you NEVER want to worry about damaging your bumper again, I suggest you visit my website and see what I installed to protect my front end and then check out my "wreck" page to see the damage I've inflicted upon others with it.  They are extremely friendly and do fantastic work, and they ENJOY doing custom stuff.

As far as connections go, their design connects directly to the front of the frame.  Anything having to do with the stock bumper is removed and placed in the dumpster (where it belongs in my opinion).  On each side of the frame there is on bolt straight on and two from the side.  Bumper Connection has a universal-type bolt pattern to accommodate any variances in the frame design/alignment.  Mine was a breeze for myself, a buddy and an engine hoist to install (my particular bumper weighs 400#).  Removing the existing bumper is another trick, however, and we finally decided to employ a cutting torch just to get some of it out of the way.

I'll soon be adding a pic of the almost trivial scratch that the S-10 left on my bumper after I virtually destroyed it & spun it 3 times in the middle of the intersection.  My frame was tweaked just a tad, but nothing major.  Had I hit him that day with a stock truck, mine would have certainly been totalled as he would have smushed into my truck rather than bounce off of it.  In fact, he did more damage as his truck spun around and proceeded to rip off my right rear dually fender and rear bumper.  You asked where the impact energy goes?  98% into the other vehicle.  I barely felt the impact as my truck almost didn't decelerate at all on impact.  I see your point about the shock absorption theory, but I've actually been there and I wouldn't trade the Great White Bumper for anything (or my 12v for that matter!).

As a side note, the bumper I have actually REINFORCES the front section
of my frame due to it's rigidity and design of the connection.

Before you rule out getting a far superior bumper, I would suggest that you call Mike Loessberg at Bumper Connection.  He's got customers who have run into far bigger things than I have with his bumpers and he'll tell it to you straight.  He's a nice guy and won't give you a lot of hype, especially if you tell him I sent you.  It's worth calling him if for no other reason than to hear some of the stories!

BTW, that S-10 I crushed hit the right front corner of my mega-bumper where the smaller pipe that curls around the headlight is.  IT NEVER BUDGED.  The structure of the bumper was completely uncompromised after a 40mph broadside.  In fact, it split the guy's wheel in half and suffered only a small scratch in the metal about 1.5" long.  My blinker was cracked only because his hood came through between the bumper pipes.

Ranch Hand makes good equipment, and are well known.  I looked in depth at their stuff when choosing my bumper and went with Bumper Connection Inc. instead for several reasons:

  1. Personal attention/customization.  BCI will build whatever you want.
  2. FACTORY color choices. RH only comes in black, dealer must have it painted and charge you more for it. (at least that was the deal when I bought mine)
  3. Heavier guage/larger diameter pipe (prevents having a "flimsy" look)
  4. RH does not have as clean of a finish (welds, connections, termination under the grill, etc.)
  5. Price. When I bought mine, a RH would have been $200 more for the same bumper w/smaller pipe
